The Boeing 757 is over four decades old, having entered service in 1983 with launch customer Eastern Air Lines. Having committed to developing two new aircraft by the end of the 1970s (the other being the 767), Boeing envisioned the 757 as the successor to its popular Boeing 727 trijet, developing it to serve short and medium-haul routes with a capacity of around 180-200 passengers.
