During the Second World War, dogfights, or single air-to-air combat between fighters, came to define aerial warfare. The vast majority of such events occurred between piston-powered fighters like the North American P-51D Mustang. Eventually, however, technological innovations led to new fighters with jet engines that could fly faster, were highly maneuverable, and carried impressive armaments.
