Tom Elliott left concerned by Melbourne’s projected population by 2050

Tom Elliott has voiced his concerns with Melbourne projected population by 2050, which was revealed to be nine million people during last week’s M2050 summit at Melbourne Town Hall.

The 3AW Mornings host pictured what Melbourne will be like with nine million people, and stated “there is no way we will ever, ever win world’s most liveable city again”.

This question from Tom after Melbourne has recently been named one of the worlds best cities

“It will not be the same city,” he said.

  1. There is no way Melbourne can sustain this growth as too many years have passed for the infrastructure to have been built. Labour has been in government the best part of a generation and we have very little infrastructure to show for it. We need the SRL and the Metro Tunnel 1 and 2.

    1. You seem rather confused, there has been huge transport infrastructure investment in Victoria over the past 20 years – level crossing removals, suburban extension to Mernda, new freeway lanes, Western Distributor freeway, North East Link, Melbourne Metro and almost complete reconstruction of regional lines plus new rollingstock. The real concern for Melbourne is that current water storages will not cope with huge population growth over the next 10-20 years.

  2. Melbourne is stuffed without a significant uplift in public transport projects including and not less than regional upgrades. Melbourne is exploding and way behind the investment curve.

    1. To be sure such a long delay between rail line investment we need to at least double the investment in metro underground rail but it must not be with the CFMEU.
