ABC Melbourne scores worst-ever result

ABC Melbourne’s new breakfast lineup has got off to a limp start, helping the public broadcaster deliver its worst-ever result in a radio ratings survey.

The ABC’s 4.7 per cent share of radio listeners, down 1.2 percentage points on the final survey of 2024, was the big red headline in a radio survey packed with different storylines. It is the first time the network has fallen below the 5 per cent mark in Melbourne.

New breakfast duo Sharnelle Vella and former Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy began the year with a 6.3 per cent audience share, down on Sammy J’s 7.9 per cent in the previous survey.

It is perplexing to see this slump as the show (i listen to it in the morning) is not bad and I feel they work well as a team. There is more listener involvement with this team than previous Sammy J.

It did grow its cumulative audience from 404,000 to 450,000 in Melbourne, however. This figure describes the number of people who listened for at least eight minutes during the survey period.
