Modern aircraft are designed to cope with interference from portable electronic devices (like mobile phones) – so over time the reasons for requiring cell phones to be on airplane mode have grown more cautionary in nature. It was determined in 2014 that cell phones could interfere with an aircraft’s systems, although things may have changed since.
