Why The Apache Will Not Be Used In Close Air Support Like The A-10 Warthog

As air defenses proliferate, the Apache finds new roles while the A-10 struggles to adapt.

The type entered service in 1976.

The Northrop YA-9 was a more conventional ground attack aircraft that would also have carried the same GAU-8 Avenger autocannon.

Over 100 A-10s have been lost to accidents over the years while the ‘bathtub’ has protected the pilot in battle.

The F-35A is the main replacement for the A-10, while the F-16 and various other systems will also fill some of the roles.

By 2030, it appears all A-10 Warthogs will be in the boneyard – with a few potentially operated by a third country (maybe Jordan).

As the Air Force (and other services) introduces new aircraft, various types of aircraft are expected to retire before 2030.

While the A-10 Warthog is older than most of the pilots flying it nowadays, Colonel ‘Karl’ Marks is a notable exception.
