Touted as the first of its kind in Australia, the plant will convert low-carbon methanol from forestry residues and hydrogen into SAF. It comes after HAMR secured funding from Qantas and Airbus for a Victorian project to create the methanol supply.

Dr Kimberly Camrass is currently Head of Sustainability for Asia Pacific and India at Boeing, where she leads regional aviation decarbonisation efforts, including sustainable aviation fuel advocacy, policy development and cross-sector partnerships.

Under the Australia-China Cooperation for Sustainable Aviation project, Adelaide University will look to “strengthen collaboration between Australian and Chinese stakeholders” on faster development and deployment of SAF into the supply chain.

According to the scientists, the process does not convert carbon dioxide directly into jet fuel, but into “basic chemical building blocks” that can be used for low-emissions fuels and other applications currently served by fossil resources.
