Throughout its development, the F-35 joint strike fighter got a bad rapmostly from its delays, cost overruns, and accusations that it was a poor dogfighter. But now that the platform has matured, few dispute that it is perhaps the world’s premier multi-role fighter. Its per-unit costs have now become similar to those of some 4.5-generation aircraft (a bit over $100 million). What is indisputable is that the US Air Force‘s and Navy’s aircraft have evolved prodigiously over the years. The first aircraft the Navy acquired 100 years ago looks nothing like the F-35 today.
