Port of Valencia records rail freight growth in first half of the year

The port of Valencia moved 123,933 containers during the first half of the year, 5.93% more than the same period in 2024. An increase was also recorded for total tonnes moved by rail, which rose by 7.78% reaching 1,64 million.
In total, the port handled over 2,83 million containers (+3.84%) during the first six months of 2025, which means that only 4.4% of the total was loaded on freight trains. Ro-Ro traffic has also grown, with 269,637 intermodal transport units moved (+7.78%). “This type of operation is essential for regular connections with the Balearic Islands, Italy, and other Mediterranean destinations”, the port said.

Positive figures overall

Imports and exports at the port of Valencia both rose, respectively by 15.21% and 4.82%, “confirming that the port’s driving force is always linked to the direct flow of goods originating in or destined for Spain”. On the other hand, the number of containers in transit slightly decreased by 1.75%. The main partner of the port of Valencia remains, by far, China, with 382,562 TEUs. It is followed by the United States (195,534 TEUs), Algeria (160,993 TEUs), Türkyie (127,292 TEUs) and India (81,795 TEUs).

Rail freight developments in Valencia

Over the past months, the port of Valencia has undertaken various initiatives to boost rail freight. For example, a rail highway service connecting the port to Madrid was launched in July 2024. The service was interrupted between October and December due to extreme weather conditions but it is not fully up and running, with the very concrete possibility of extending the service to Portugal soon.
