While China is racing to catch up, the US is investing big into leaping into the next-generation aircraft it hopes will preserve its qualitative edge for decades to come. The Next Generation Air Dominance fighter (NGAD) is perhaps the Air Force’s largest development project, and it is betting big on the program, ensuring the United States Air Force maintains its lead. Currently, the Air Force is spending billions on developing the system, but will be spending far more once it eventually enters production.
