Polish infrastructure manager PKP PLK and the Port of Gdańsk have signed an agreement to expand and improve accessways to deepwater terminals on Stogi island.
Currently, all rail transport from the deepwater part of the port crosses a single bridge. That is not enough, according to the Gdańsk port. An expansion of the accessways is therefore a long-standing wish of its CEO, Dorota Pyć.
She points out that the existing network has already become a limiting factor in the growth of the port. The development of intermodal connections has become a pillar of the port’s strategy, Pyć explained, and expanded rail accessways are a part of that vision.
Economically vital
Deepwater facilities such as Naftoport, Gaspol and Port Północny, all crucial to the energy supply of Poland. The Baltic Hub terminal constitutes “a strategic pillar of Poland’s economic and logistical development”, says PKP PLK.
“The key role of seaports in the development of the Polish economy is undeniable”, commented Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure. “To make them more competitive, we need to plan further investments now, including those related to improving rail capacity. Therefore, the agreement between PKP PLK and the Port of Gdańsk Authority is all the more gratifying.”
PKP PLK and the Gdańsk port will first develop a feasibility study, which should be completed in 2027. That will be followed by design documentation in 2028. The project should be complete by 2034.
