There is some positive news regarding Spain’s future rolling highway service which connects its largest port, Algeciras, with one of its most important logistics centres, Zaragoza. New signalling systems are being implemented along 167 kilometres of railways.
Moreover, Rail & Truck, which will operate the trains, received the first three locomotives from Stadler. The three locomotives are part of an order for seven Stadler Euro6000 electric locomotives and 150 wagons for the transport of semi-trailers. For these initiatives, the company received over 45 million euros from Spain’s Recovery and Resilience Fund.
The new signalling will concern the provinces of Còrdoba and Jaen. The first stretch is a 92.5-kilometre line between Còrdoba and Lora del Río, for an investment of 67.63 million euros. The second section is between Espelúy and Peñalajo, 74 kilometres long, for 63 million euros. In total, the investments will be a little over 130.6 million euros.
The project will include the installation of 36 new interlocking systems, fixed and illuminated signals and telecommunications. In addition, this equipment will be integrated into the centralised traffic control system to manage traffic remotely and in real time. All these actions will be propaedeutic to the opening of the Algeciras-Zaragoza rolling highway, for which an opening date has not yet been set.
