A UPS Airlines MD-11 cargo plane, Flight 2976, crashed into an industrial area near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening around 5:15 p.m. local time shortly after departing for Honolulu, Hawaii, erupting into a massive fireball that ignited multiple buildings and scattered debris.
Authorities issued a five-mile shelter-in-place order due to potential toxic fumes from the cargo and the 280,000 gallons of fuel on board, with first responders battling the blaze.
The FAA and NTSB have launched an investigation into the cause, and no casualties have been confirmed among the three crew members or on the ground.
