Dublin Protesters Clash with Police After Algerian Asylum Seeker’s Alleged Assault on 10-Year-Old Girl

On October 21, 2025, thousands of protesters in Dublin hurled fireworks and bottles at Gardaí outside the Citywest Hotel, an asylum seeker accommodation center, following the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in state care by a 26-year-old Algerian man with a failed asylum claim and unenforced deportation order.

The incident occurred near the hotel on October 20 after the girl went missing from Tusla supervision; the suspect was arrested, charged, and remanded in custody.

Officials, including Minister Roderic O’Gorman and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, ordered reviews into child protection lapses and immigration enforcement failures amid the unrest that led to a burned police van, minor injuries, and six arrests.
