Network Rail is delivering a crucial infrastructure upgrade on the North Downs line this October coming weekend, replacing the track that connects the North Downs line to the Great Western main line between Reading and Wokingham.
The work runs from Saturday 25 to and including Monday 27 October, and marks a significant step forward in enhancing rail reliability for thousands of passengers.
During the closure, alternative travel arrangements will be in place:
- GWR trains will operate between Wokingham and Redhill or Gatwick Airport
- South Western Railway trains will run between Wokingham and London Waterloo
- Replacement buses will service all journeys between Reading and Wokingham
- Journeys by bus will take about 15 minutes longer than the train – passengers are advised to plan ahead
The upgrade is part of a wider programme to transform the North Downs line, and in so doing to allow for greater service frequency in the future.
Mark Goodall, Network Rail’s Wessex route director, said: “Half term provides us with the opportunity to minimize passenger impact while delivering this essential upgrade. Our teams will work around the clock to complete these works safely and efficiently. We’re sorry for the disruption, but passengers will benefit from a more resilient network that keeps them moving.”
Gatwick Airport remains fully accessible by rail throughout the works, with Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services continuing alongside rail alternatives.
Andy Gallaugher, GWR station manager for the North Downs line, commented: “We’re investing in the railway’s future. While we know disruption is never welcome, this critical work will deliver real benefits for passengers in the long term. Services to Gatwick Airport remain uninterrupted, and our replacement bus service ensures connectivity throughout the closure period.”
Further engineering work is scheduled for Sunday 2 and Sunday 9 November, and the weekend of 29/30 November in the Wokingham area.
Passengers are urged to check their journey before traveling and allow extra time.
