Keir Starmer Mandates Digital ID for All UK Workers by 2029

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on September 26, 2025, at a London conference that all UK adults will require a free digital ID, dubbed the ‘Brit card,’ to prove their right to work by the end of the current Parliament in 2029.

The policy integrates the ID with GOV.UK smartphone apps to enhance border security, reduce illegal employment, and eliminate paper documents, alongside a £2.5 billion border investment.

Opposition from leaders like Nigel Farage, Jeremy Corbyn, Boris Johnson, and John Swinney highlights privacy and civil liberties concerns, with a parliamentary petition surpassing one million signatures in 24 hours.
