James McDonnell is one of the aviation world’s most important figures, establishing the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, which would later be merged with Boeing. Born in 1899, McDonnell earned an aeronautical engineering degree from MIT in the mid-1920s before attempting his first-ever aircraft design, the McDonnell Doodlebug.
