It comes after Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy announced in October that Australia’s military would target achieving net zero emissions by 2050 by transitioning to alternative fuel sources and introducing renewable electricity.
The first of the upgraded helicopters, VH-LF3, touched down in Mount Isa this week, with LifeFlight CEO Ashley van de Velde saying the AW139 is the perfect search and rescue aircraft to cover the long distances in the region.
The project has secured $760,000 in Queensland Government funding and aims to start construction in 2026. It will use LanzaJet’s Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) technology to create ethanol-based fuel, with the expectation of 102 million litres of SAF per year.
