Videos emerging online appear to show what is claimed to be Israeli attacks on or near Russia’s Hmeimim Air Base (also spelled Khmeimim) in Syria. The strikes appear to be targeting Iranian shipments there. If true, it would likely be a major event in the escalating war between Israel and Iran with its allied proxies (including the Houthis, Hezbollah, and Hamas groups). Hmeimim is located in the coastal Syrian region of Latakia and hosts a permanent Russian Air Forcegarrison. The attack appears to be retaliation for Iran’s attacks on Israel that targeted its airbases housing its valuable F-35 fighter jets.
