The F-4 Phantom is a twin-engine, long-range supersonic fighter jet designed and developed by McDonnell Aircraft in the late 1950s. The aircraft was initially designed as an all-weather interceptor for the United States Navy (USN). The aircraft performed its first flight in May 1958 and entered service with USN in December 1960.
