On the afternoon of June 14, a Russian Air Force Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer breached Swedish airspace east of the strategic island of Gotland. For the newest member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the incident caused a diplomatic stir and a scramble of two Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets.
