Amey appointed to deliver systemwide integration for Northern Powerhouse Rail

Amey has secured a new contract with Network Rail to provide systemwide integration services for Phase One of the Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) programme, further strengthening its role in one of the UK’s most significant rail infrastructure programmes.

Awarded through Network Rail’s Development and Design Partnership Framework (DDPF), the new Systemwide Integration contract will see Amey serve as the system integrator across six major projects that form part of NPR Phase One. As part of the contract, Amey will provide system engineering leadership to ensure the six individual projects come together as a cohesive network solution. The role will help ensure the programme is developed as a single, integrated railway, supporting the case for Phase One of Northern Powerhouse Rail across the Bradford to Leeds, Leeds Station, Leeds to York and Leeds to Sheffield corridors.

Working closely with Network Rail and subcontractors, Amey will lead the development of a Network Option Selection Report, bringing together key performance metrics including journey times, network performance, maintainability, constructability, sustainability, cost estimates, benefits mapping, and land and consents. Amey’s whole system approach to the programme will help ensure that the combined benefits of the individual projects deliver greater value for passengers, communities, and the wider rail network.

Colin Wood, managing director at Amey, said:  “We are pleased to have secured another major contract as part of the Development and Design Partnership Framework. It reflects the confidence Network Rail has in our ability to deliver complex programmes and develop solutions that deliver benefits across the network as a whole.

“At Amey, we believe major rail programmes succeed when individual projects are designed and delivered as part of a wider, integrated system. The Northern Powerhouse Rail programme has the potential to transform connectivity across the North of England, and we are proud to be supporting the development of a joined-up railway solution that balances performance, resilience and long-term value for local communities. We look forward to working with Network Rail and partners to help shape the next phase of this important programme.”

The appointment builds on Amey’s growing partnership with Network Rail and follows the recent awarding of the Leeds to Sheffield corridor contract for NPR. It also further reinforces the company’s position as a trusted partner in the planning, development and delivery of complex rail infrastructure programmes. As the third major project awarded to Amey through the framework, the contract also provides a strong platform for the continued growth of its Rail Consulting business.
