In July and August, the United States Air Force ran exercises operating its new and considerably upgraded Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules in austere environments in Iceland during Exercise Northern Viking. During these exercises, the Super Hercules landed and took off from grassy fields and a beach, demonstrating that they can operate in austere environments.
