The Swedish infrastructure manager Trafikverket has commissioned contractor Svevia to expand the Malmö rail freight yard. Svevia will build two new rail bridges, increase capacity and ensure more efficient freight handling at the location, the company says.
The contract is worth around 163 million Swedish crowns (nearly €15 million). It will likely last for three years, until the autumn of 2029.
Malmö freight yard will get a new siding to the existing freight yard and combined terminal approach track. This should relieve the yard’s approach during high traffic, says Svevia, and improve traffic for freight trains arriving and departing via the Continental Line, which runs between Malmö and rail freight ferry port town Trelleborg. Moreover, the expansion of the Malmö freight yard will also enable parking 750-metre-long trains.
Complexity
Svevia considers the project to be complex. “Building a railway bridge in this environment places high demands on planning and coordination”, commented company representative Annika Pålsson.
“We need to deal with several technical areas at the same time, including tracks, signalling systems and overhead lines, while the work takes place in an environment with both road and rail traffic. This is the type of technically demanding construction project where our experience comes in handy.”
