Georgian Railways launched a procurement via the World Bank for the construction and delivery of 45 electric locomotives, for an estimated amount of €358 million ($413 million). The tender, launched via the World Bank, aims at boosting Georgia’s role in the Middle Corridor.
Companies interested will be allowed to submit their bids and proposals from 30 October 2026. The offers will be evaluated in February 2027 and the signing of the contract is planned for the next 12 April. The completion of the contract, aka the delivery of the 45 units, is expected by November 2031.
TC-GATE
This tender is part of the TC-GATE project, which stands for Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor – Georgia Accessibility and Transport Enhancement. In total, the country will receive somewhere around €650 million ($750 million) from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
In addition to the new electric locomotives, the TC-GATE funds will also be deployed to build road infrastructure, more specifically the Badiauri–Chalaubani–Bakurtsikhe section and a road connecting Gurjaani to Telavi, both in the east. On top of this, Georgia also pledged to invest €1.4 billion to upgrade the rail network and freight wagon fleet over the next decade.
