Tarmac delays are a common occurrence, particularly at busy airports. Even though here at Simple Flying we try to refrain from the term tarmac when referring to the airport ground, the Department of Transportation says that tarmac delay is a waiting period for the aircraft awaiting taxi or takeoff clearance after departing the gate or clearance to arrive after landing.
