An Indigenous elder who was booed at the Anzac Day Dawn Service while delivering a ‘Welcome to Country’ has denied he misused the legally protected word Anzac to sell a range of hoodies, shirts, trackies and sneakers.
Mark Brown, features clothing items on his ‘Dreaming Spirit’ website with the legally protected word ‘Anzac’ in the product title, starting at $90 for T-shirts and up to $180 for hoodies and puffer jackets.
“To clarify, I have not used the word Anzac on the merchandise in question” Mr Brown said.
“I am aware of commentary online, however much of it reflects misunderstanding and, at times, hostility toward Aboriginal people”
Under Australian law, the word “Anzac” is heavily restricted in relation to some official and commercial uses.
Mark Brown clearly uses the word “Anzac” to sell his unauthorised merchandise. He has never served in the Military and is now trying to cash in on it.
This is an insult to all who have served. It remains to be seen whether the law will apply to him.
Or just to us.
