TheBoeing 787 , which was the first airliner to have an airframe primarily made from composite materials, has been in service since 2011. As such, it may puzzle readers to learn that the much newerBoeing 777X, which is due to be introduced next year, has an aluminum fuselage and composite wings. Composite materials for this application are made from carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers, and have been successful due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity.

We know that when an airline places an order with a planemaker, deliveries are almost never instantaneous. Rather, a first delivery is more likely to take place in a few years. There are, of course exceptions to this rule such as picking up a few whitetail aircraft or acquiring from a lessor. But, well, that’s the case for Vietnamese airline VietJet. The carrier signed an initial agreement in 2016 and is only now about to get its first 737 MAX jets.
