Royal Commission into the Bondi Beach terror attack would not be in the national interest

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has suggested that a Royal Commission into the Bondi Beach terror attack would not be in the national interest, arguing his departmental review would be more effective.

Mr Albanese has overlooked the highest form of independent public inquiry and instead launched a review of law enforcement agencies led by his own department

The Bondi Beach massacre, which occurred during a Hanukkah celebration on December 14, left 15 people dead and dozens injured.

Families of the victims wrote to Mr Albanese on Monday and urged him to establish a Commonwealth Royal Commission into the attack.

He has snubbed those requests and defended his departmental review, saying his job was to “act in the national interest”.

“I have nothing except sympathy for those families. Nothing but sympathy,” Mr Albanese said at a press conference on Monday.

  1. Albanese says a federal royal commission into Bondi massacre is not a priority. Commonwealth will cooperate with NSW royal commission into policing, gun licensing + national security intel failures (re IS influenced terror). He says Dennis Richardson will urgently identify gaps.
