MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro Shot Dead in Brookline Home

Police responded to 9 Gibbs St. around 8:30 p.m. and rushed Loureiro to a hospital, where he died Tuesday from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s office leads the active homicide investigation, with no suspect, motive, or robbery details released. Loureiro directed MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center since May 2024, advancing clean energy through plasma physics and nuclear fusion.

MIT President Sally Kornbluth called him a brilliant scientist and compassionate leader, as colleagues mourn his irreplaceable guidance amid the global fusion race.
