Australia Prepares to Ban Under-16s from Social Media Starting December 10

From December 10, 2025, major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X must block Australian accounts for anyone under 16 using facial scans or ID checks, with fines up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance.

The law seeks to protect children from addictive algorithms and cyberbullying, but a survey of over 17,000 kids under 16 found 70% oppose it, and 75% of those with accounts plan to keep using the sites anyway.

Backed by supporters praising child safety and critics decrying overreach, the High Court will soon rule on the students’ bid to stop enforcement.
