Sydney Teens Challenge Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban in High Court

The High Court will review their case, which claims the ban—set to start December 10, 2025—violates an implied freedom of political communication and requires invasive age checks like facial recognition for all users.

Platforms face fines up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance, while the government defends it as protection from bullying, body image struggles, and abuse material.

Backed by MP John Ruddick, the teens say parenting shouldn’t fall to tech firms; supporters, including grieving parents, highlight the real dangers for young minds.

The outcome could halt the law before it begins.
