The measure aims to protect youth from harmful content and mental health risks, amid praise from supporters and criticism over surveillance concerns, while similar policies advance in Denmark and New Zealand and a High Court challenge is planned in Australia.
Data indicates one in five Australian children encounters harmful online material weekly, driving the legislation.
It has nothing to do with keeping under 16s safe and everything to do with a digital ID and monitoring online activity even further. Some young people will suffer tremendously because of the ban. Many will find alternative ways to be online – and good on them for that.
