ICAC witness Ibrahim Helmy, who vanished ahead of NSW transport corruption inquiry arrested

A man who vanished prior to facing the NSW corruption watchdog over allegations he rigged the awarding of transport contracts worth millions of dollars has been found, months after an arrest warrant was issued.

Ibrahim Helmy, a former Transport for NSW employee, was arrested by Cybercrime Squad detectives just after 1:30pm on Friday in Lakemba, in Sydney’s south-west.

“He [Mr Helmy] was taken to Campsie Police Station where the warrant was executed, which authorises police to detain the man to ensure his appearance before the ICAC [Independent Commission Against Corruption] inquiry,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“No criminal charges have been laid.”

The watchdog’s investigation centres on Mr Helmy — who worked at the transport agency in different roles for 15 years until his employment was terminated in February — but encompasses a network of almost two dozen people.

In July, the ICAC initiated hearings over a six-week period under Operation Wyvern.

On day one it alleged Mr Helmy had received more than $11.5 million in corrupt rewards and benefits, including cryptocurrency, gold and cash payments.

It was also alleged he had arranged for four colleagues to ensure businesses he had corrupt relationships with would be awarded contract work valued from $12 million to $99 million.
