As of 2025, NASA continues to operate the final Super Guppy cargo aircraft that had been intended for the museum 28 years ago. NASA acquired the Super Guppy (registered N941NA) as it retired from Airbus service in 1997 to replace the previous Super Guppy that NASA retired in 1991. Airbus and Boeing are able to develop their outsized cargo aircraft (the BelugaXL and Dreamlifter) to carry wings and fuselages of very predictable sizes; NASA sometimes needs to transport one-of-a-kind loads that may require extra space.
