The origin of the Boeing 747 program was to build an extra-large military transport for the United States Air Force. Boeing lost to Lockheed, which went on to build the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy for the Air Force. Boeing took its designs and developed the 747 commercial jet that proved to be an excellent success, with around 1,500 examples delivered by the time the project ended in 2023. The Boeing 747 Jumbo first entered service with Pan Am in 1970.

What comes to mind when you think of Qatar Airways? Perhaps the QSuite, state funding, or a sea of widebodies. What may not immediately spring forth is the carrier’s least-served routes. Of course, its a similar deal for most airlines – the least popular destinations tend to get the oldest and smallest aircraft. And, in the case of Qatar Airways, most of these least-served routes see the soon-to-be-retired A320ceo, which is hardly earth-shattering.
