Steamtown Heritage Railway Museum closed due to costs

Peterborough District Council has pushed ahead with a 10 per cent average rate hike, which will still leave a $524,000 hole in its budget.

It is the highest rate increase in South Australia so far this year.

The town’s railway museum has been forced to close amid the cost crunch, with council documents showing it has bled at least $1.5 million since opening in 2009.

Council said in a statement that Steamtown will be closed until until 2026 at the earliest while “a new operating model is developed”.

Peterborough residents Molly Moate, Harry Moate and Christopher Dean have raised concerns about the council’s 10 per cent rate hike.

Expected to be closed until 2026 at the earliest.
