The bulk of the United States’ industrial war effort in World War II went into the production of aircraft and naval vessels. The Army’s vehicles, like tanks, were a comparatively small part of the overall industrial effort. Throughout the conflict, the United States industry produced around 300,000 aircraft of all types. Whereas the Soviet Union’s aircraft production was heavily weighted to small fighters, the US production included many expensive heavy bombers.
