Train lines remain suspended, a crane arrives but carriages not removed

By way of an update on the Sunday evening derailment in the inner Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill, Cranes appeared on site last evening when Railpage had another live facebook update on the incident. Having just returned from the site a crane is indeed on site but the carriages have not moved with many workers wandering around the site.

It is evident the overhead around the derailed carriages has been removed presumably to be replaced after the crane has done its work. By the setup it appears the crane is rigged to lift the carriage off the rails and probably place it onto a flat bed for removal. Alternatively they may install another bogie under the carriage. If this was the case then why the need to remove so much overhead?

What has changed from yesterday is the first 4 carriages of the 6 car set have been moved to just south of Clifton Hill Station. On the UP end is SSR’s P16 idling away with the first carriage from the second set of 3 cars.

Earlier yesterday P17 arrived to remove the first 3 cars from the 6 car set and took them back into Melbourne.

Railpage will be live again later today.

  1. They must be sand bagging this job.

Took the 86 tram to Clifton hill and walked around the corner to witness the crane doing buggar all and around 30 people walking ups and down the track. same as reports over the past 2 days, with my estimate being the crane was onsite for at least 15 hours before it was out into use. 13 hours went by without anything really happening.

it has been said here and elsewhere the system is run for the operators not the public. The lines being closed is a massive inconvenience for 1 million people needing access to the train. The 86 tram was packed on the way back to the city can’t imagine what it is line in peak hour.

  2. Comment on the above posting from bevans

the crane lifted the carriage out of the rail easement and onto a truck. Why would they need to do this when they could have lifted one end and placed a bogie under that end and then dragged the carriage out slowly and moved Ito Melbourne at low speed?

They are taking a lot of time when it does not take that long. A week to fix a one bogie derailment is a joke.

  3. Buses will continue to replace trains on the Hurstbridge and Mernda lines tomorrow morning 15 July following an ongoing equipment fault near Clifton Hill.

Hurstbridge line passengers will need to use buses between Eltham and Parliament stations, while replacement buses will service Mernda passengers between Reservoir and Parliament.

Trains continue to operate between Mernda and Reservoir, and Hurstbridge and Eltham, with delays likely.

  4. Enquiry needed into the management of the incident and not just the cause. This is just an awfully slow fix for a major set of train lines. They do not care about train passengers.

  5. Not content with stuffing two major rail lines Metro have now closed the route 86 tram making travel form the northern suburbs as bad as it could be. These guys at Metro have no shame.

  6. More rumours are now coming around the accident which those at work say could only be a speeding driver or a track fault. The word internally is a track fault that was not addressed. There are many cases over the network where poorer quality rail has been installed and is wearing and causing issues. We do not have an track crews on staff anymore.

    1. Hi LeakyBoat,

We will not know what caused it until the invesigation has concluded from ARTC and the reports of their finding are released and report via MSM…..

      For now TBA….

      1. ARTC are not involved it is the ATSB.

A derailment happened nearby a few years ago and the outcome was found to be poor maintenance.

        1. What do you think may happen? it has happen before…..so you say….

What ever it will be I think few people might lost their role in the managment if was found to be as you say and few other issues……

          1. Maintenance has not been done and the rail was in poor condition. I think that is a certainty. ATSB would have the records now and it would not be a pretty sight.

  7. Took a look last night and talk about dragging their heals. This could should have been done in a couple of days not 9 days. Shameful.

We now know metro trains is without the ability to deal with derailments and other unforeseen events. We also now know they are not maintaining the network to a high enough standard.
