Aptly derived from French in the mid-18th century, somber was the unfortunate buzzword at the 2025 Paris Air Show in Le Bourget. The original word comes from Latin, of course. A combination of “under” (sub) and “shade” (umbra), of which, ironically, there was very little in the steaming Parisian summer sun.
