In October 2022, billionaire Elon Musk purchased Twitter and soon renamed it X, bringing the brand in line with other Elon Musk companies like SpaceX. At the time, Musk said he was a “free speech absolutist” and vowed to remove hate speech and other restrictions on X (Twitter). While there are some questions about how neutral the Twitter (now X) platform is in promoting content, the platform’s anti-hate speech and disinformation policies have been relaxed.
