In October 2022, billionaire Elon Musk purchased Twitter and soon renamed it X, bringing the brand in line with other Elon Musk companies like SpaceX. At the time, Musk said he was a “free speech absolutist” and vowed to remove hate speech and other restrictions on X (Twitter).
