Victoria to ban machetes from Wednesday 28th May

Stores in Victoria will be banned from selling machetes from this Wednesday, following a violent brawl at Northland Shopping Centre over the weekend.

The Allan Government had previously earmarked a ban on the sale of the dangerous weapon from September 1, however that has now been brought forward to this week as a result of Sunday’s incident.

Victoria Police have charged two teenagers – a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy – over the brawl at Northland which left one man with serious injuries and temporarily sent the centre into lockdown.

“We’re doing this today as quickly as possible, because we must never let the places where we gather, the places where families come together to shop, to enjoy the peace of their weekend, become places we fear,” Allan stated in a press conference a short time ago.
