Traditionally, legacy airlines like American Airlines have an extremely condensed operational network, with all services operating in and out of just a handful of hub airports. For example, extremely few passengers will either fly directly to or from a major legacy airline hub or connect through one on their way to their final destination. This allows airlines to operate as many services as possible despite having a limited number of aircraft at their disposal.
