A power outage has struck the entire Iberian peninsula and parts of France, including rail infrastructure: Trains have ground to a halt.
The power outage started shortly after noon. It remains unclear what the effects of the disturbance are for the rail sector, apart from the fact that trains are not driving. Spanish national rail operator Renfe, parent company of freight operator Renfe Mercancías, writes on social media that the network went down around 12:30. All trains have been stopped and no trains are departing in any location in the country.
It is the biggest power outage in the history of Spain, according to the network operator. Besides trains, metros, trams and traffic lights are also down.
Power restoration
In the south of France, power has reportedly been restored already. The Spanish network operator estimates that a complete restoration of power will take another six to ten hours.
