A young Indigenous woman has made a bold call

Kiesha Jamieson wants ‘Acknowledgements of Country’ scrapped.

It’s being used for politics, creating division. I’m all for celebrating and supporting aboriginal culture, but in a way that is enjoyable, not being made to feel like imposters in the land we were born in.

The only use of smoke by tribes that I have read was for preparing girls for marriage to men, or to keep mosquitos at bay when resting.

Indigenous entertainers Ernie Dingo and Richard Whalley, of the Middar Aboriginal Theatre, claim to have invented the “welcome to country” in 1976 because two pairs of Maori visitors from NZ and the Cook Islands wanted an equivalent of their own traditional ceremony.
