In the United States today, almost all the largest commercial airports fall into one of two categories. They are either hub airports or operating bases for some airlines. Any airport that is not classified as a hub airport or at least an operating base for some carrier typically sees fairly limited commercial service, with just a few flights connecting it to larger, more important facilities from which passengers can catch connecting services to other destinations.
