CFR Marfă reports operating profit in 2024

The bankrupt Romania state rail freight operator CFR Marfă has achieved an operating profit in 2024. Its results are worse than those of 2023, and are in line with market tendencies in Romania.
In short, the operator achieved an operating profit of 6,8 million Romanian lei. It had a total annual revenue of 820 million lei and a turnover of 676 million lei. It transported 12,3 million tonnes of freight, amounting to 2,37 billion tonne-kilometres.

“The 2024 financial results reflect a stable performance throughout the year, in line with the declining evolution of the Romanian transport market, in which most competitors recorded decreases in revenues, profits or transport volumes”, the operator’s general manager Daniel Apostolache said. “By implementing effective cost-cutting measures and increasing operating efficiency, the company managed to end the year with an operating profit.”

Worse than in 2023

The company performed worse than in 2023. In that year, CFR Marfă transported approximately 15 million tonnes of cargo, compared to 17 million tonnes in 2022, according to Romanian publication Club Feroviar. At the time, the company had a total revenue of over one billion lei, and an operating profit of 110 million lei.

It is unclear for how much longer the bankrupted CFR Marfă will continue to operate. The 2024 report could be the last annual report in the company’s history. It is being replaced by a new state operator, Carpatica Feroviar. However, the Romanian government’s strategy to get that company off the ground may be in breach of EU competition rules, which also brought down CFR Marfă.
