Shane McInnes says it’s time for a complete re-think on public transport costs at major Melbourne events.
While a daily myki fare to attend events like the Australian Open is now $11, the MCG is offering a cheaper $10 car parking pass across the road from Melbourne Park.
The 3AW Afternoons host says it’s startling that it costs more to catch the train compared to a parking, calling on public transport to be made free if you’re attending major events in line with other states in Australia.

“It’s all well and good to say ‘use public transport it’s the best way to get there’,” he said on 3AW.
“People pay through the nose for events in this town … a free ride, surely isn’t too much to ask.”
Great idea and should be considered but why when the network closes down so early and matches and other events run well into the evening. The Melbourne Rail network should be 24×7 with overnight services during the early hours through the week not just on weekends if that still works.
Hi Sally, ummm we don’t have the work ethic for a 24/7 like some overseas countries….
At the most try 05:30 to 23:00 hrs for our rail system at the most but I agree peak service express start winding down at 18:30 onwards ranging from semi express for Metro….Whist at weekend their no express metro services all are mostly stopping all stations….which is ridiculously early in week as people are still making their way from work or going home again….On Friday night most sport events start later 19:00 onwards missing most the express run to and from the city…..
V/line service regional are often stopping all station after approx 19:00 hrs!
