Back in 1944, American Airlines launched the country's first domestic scheduled freight services with its DC-3 aircraft. Over time, as demand grew, Douglas DC-4, DC-6A, and DC-7 freighter aircraft were brought into the fleet.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted American Airlines the permission to install up to 70 mini-suites on its Boeing 777-300ERs as the airline aims to refresh its aircraft with more premium seats.In its initial application in January, filed under docket FAA-2024-0257, American Airlines stated that it intended to have the mini-suites under a Supplemental Type Certificate.
